taking the bible seriously

The bible is complicated

Being “Christian” and being “Biblical” are not always the same thing.

We recognise that the Bible is a library of works that traces humanity’s growing awareness of who God is and what God is like over time. There are wrong turns, backwards steps and great leaps forward all along the way, culminating in the ultimate revelation of God’s nature as revealed in Jesus Christ.

For this reason, it is important that we don’t treat the Bible as an easy answer book or an instruction manual for the Christian faith. It is so much more than that. We recognise that the value of the scriptures is not to be found in what they say so much as what they produce in a person who honestly wrestles with them. In other words, it's not the information contained in the Bible that helps us grow, rather it is the practice of trying to discover God's word through the scriptures that nourishes us. Studying the Bible is good, but letting the Bible study you is even better.

It is therefore our practice to follow the weekly readings as set out in the Revised Common Lectionary, allowing the full breadth of scripture to challenge us we seek to faithfully follow Jesus in our culture.  You can find the lectionary readings here.
